For more information on what's happening campuswide, visit Maryland Day 2024. Our staff is trained to make organization and community-scale decision-making easier and more inclusive. As facilitators, we design the engagement process, structure meetings and workshops, document the process, and provide findings to enable stakeholders to bring their expertise to projects. Your group will come away with a more unified vision and an enhanced ability to work as a cohesive team. Well-designed public landscapes and gardens provide meaningful community spaces, mental restoration, and room for reflection and healing. We work across scales and specialize in participatory planning — because great designs are informed by and for the community.

Designers had the challenge of transforming a 200-square-foot concession stand into a moody retail store that reflects the creative culture of Brooklyn. We believe that access to safe and functional areas for outdoor learning is key to student physical and mental health as well as learning outcomes. Whether you are a community organization, nonprofit, government agency, or firm, we encourage you to reach out to discuss your goals and needs. Since 1968, we’ve worked on more than 4,000 community-led projects in Baltimore City and Prince George’s County, Maryland.

Since then, the office has functioned in this manner – maintaining a small number of paid staff that are supported by a large number of volunteers. As Deputy Director, Briony leads development, design leadership and engagement initiatives at NDC. Briony started in her role at NDC in 2013, after completion of the Robert W. Deutsch Social Design Fellowship at Maryland Institute College of Art. The lynchpin of her work is understanding community and the shared built environment to leverage positive social change. Previously, as the founding creative director of Honfleur Gallery, Briony employed varied approaches to build creative capacity via revitalization efforts in Washington DC’s Ward 8.

We believe design is a right, not a privilege. We work with communities that others only talk about. Work with NDC.

A Baltimore resident since 1993, she has been involved in many of the city’s largest historic building rehabilitations, including the American Can Company, Silo Point and Tide Point. She received a BS in Interior Design from Indiana University and an MS in Historic Preservation from Columbia University. Hailing from Boone County Indiana, Jen’s early years included 10-year 4H membership including winning the title of master showman. Julia is a returning Baltimorean and committed localist with a passion for collaboratively imagining futures for the built environment while honoring its histories. She came to NDC after living in Berlin, Germany for six years while completing her Master's in Historical Urban Studies and working in the field of civic participation.

When not at NDC, Jenny hikes on trails and walks in their neighborhood, always looking for clotheslines, vegetable gardens, and skunk cabbage. We are home to over 70 luxury showrooms and offer an unparalleled line-up of residential and commercial products. Our services are available at no cost (pro bono), sliding scale, and market rate, depending on the project. With a staff of dedicated designers, facilitators and project managers — supported by a robust network of volunteer planners, architects, and artists — we partner on projects large and small, across jurisdictions in Maryland and Washington, D.C. We partner with communities and local government agencies to provide top notch design, planning, and capacity-building services. The volunteer architects started simply, working with residents and a few nonprofits to develop for community centers, playgrounds, affordable housing, and neighborhood master plans.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture and a minor in Construction Project Management. Angelica’s interests include anything that allows her to open up her inner creativity, and going on adventures. Angelica wants to continue her education to pursue her master’s in Architecture and Community Planning and design.

Hynson holds a BFA in Sculpture from Alfred University and an MA in Social Design from MICA. Join the Neighborhood Design Center team as we collaborate with neighborhood groups, local government agencies and fellow nonprofits to support locally driven initiatives for neighborhoods pursuing equitable quality of life improvements within their built environments. Pacific Design Center also serves the needs of the design, entertainment and arts communities by providing dramatic public and private spaces for screenings, exhibitions, lectures, meetings, special events and receptions. The 1.6 million square-foot campus presents nearly 100 boutique to international showroom brands, representing 2,200 product lines available to source by professional interior designers, architects, facility managers, decorators and dealers. By the early 1970s, what was strictly a volunteer organization could not keep up with the growing demand for services. Funding was secured through the efforts of Charles Lamb, FAIA (founding partner with the architectural firm RTKL) and NDC hired its first paid staff to manage the requests and projects.

Policies may vary from showroom to showroom, as do sample and quote request requirements. Advise your clients they will be required to show a letter of introduction to every showroom they visit in the building. Not all showrooms will allow visits by unaccompanied clients, so please check with the showroom in advance. The PDC is home to over 70 luxury showrooms and offers an unparalleled line-up of residential and commercial products. The interior of one floor of the Blue Whale, and the escalators of the same building, are used extensively as the underground workshops for the Westworld TV series.

NDC projects are collaborations between residents, community stakeholders, design professionals, local government agencies, fellow nonprofits, and our staff. Together we lay the groundwork for improving blocks, renovating parks and school grounds, reclaiming abandoned structures for community use, and revitalizing commercial districts. Our placemaking team listens to the unique history of each neighborhood and proposes design and art solutions that anchor and amplify those stories in place. We can support you in identifying public art opportunities, artist selection, designing placemaking elements and events, or securing a historic designation for your building or neighborhood. Dana is responsible for securing and managing the grants and contracts at the Neighborhood Design Center for both the Prince Georges County and Baltimore offices.

Partners with residents and local leaders to envision better parks, revitalize commercial districts, develop greening strategies, and make our public spaces more vibrant, safe, and sustainable. NDC’s internship program has included an exceptionally and intentionally diverse cohort; 75% are minorities, 75% are women, and 50% are immigrant, refugee or first generation Americans. Recent interns have included students and recent graduates from University of Maryland, MICA, and Morgan State University and are pursuing degrees in fields including Landscape Architecture, Architecture and Community Planning. Our interns go on to pursue design careers and graduate education at top firms and institutions around the country. Corps Members are full time volunteers for one year, who are paid a stipend and health benefits to cover living expenses. These positions are offered through partnerships with a range of Volunteer Corps programs that match talented service-minded individuals with nonprofit organizations.

These interventions are affordable, easy to get permits for, and quick to install. The Made You Look initiative started as a collaboration between MICA Center for Social Design and the Maryland Highway Safety Office, and is now stewarded by the Neighborhood Design Center. The Red Building has been designed to exceed the expectations of the most demanding clients offering 400,000 square feet of world class office space in two towers atop eight levels of convenient parking in the heart of West Hollywood.

The Neighborhood Design Center specializes in participatory design and planning services that support equity in the built environment. Through a process we call co-design, we collaborate with our community partners to engage stakeholders — from funders and government agencies to neighborhood leaders and residents — and create responsive, community-driven design solutions. Our work enhances fundraising applications, garners public support for community-led projects, and is an advocacy tool for community members who are building healthy, welcoming places.

She also has a Masters of International Cooperation and Sustainable Emergency Architecture from the International University of Catalonia, Barcelona, where her thesis research focused on using education facilities as temporary shelters in The Gaza Strip, Palestine. With her unwavering belief in the right of every individual to live in a safe and healthy environment, she is dedicated to finding innovative solutions for communities facing issues caused by inadequate planning and architecture. When not at work, you'll likely find her strolling through a city, searching for a chill coffee shop, seeking local street art, and looking at "cool buildings." NDC Internships are part time, paid learning opportunities for undergraduate and graduate design students to gain direct experience working with NDC design staff and community partners on localized design challenges. Interns are assigned under particular program areas such as Community Forestry or Community Design. Jenny appreciates functional landscapes that beautify and address environmental, cultural, and social challenges.
